Class of 2009 Breaks GCSE Record

Delighted students with GCSE results
Delighted students with GCSE results

From Astronomy to Religious Studies, Y11 students have excelled themselves! For the second successive year, GCSE students have recorded the school’s best ever results. Initial results show that an outstanding 75% of students achieved five or more higher grade GCSE passes at grades A* to C with 57% achieving the target including Maths and English. Both results are the best yet achieved by the school.

There were some notable individual performances. Nicola Rogers, Amy Danson, Alix Cocks and Rhiannon Jones secured the ultimate achievement, gaining all of their passes at grades A and A*. Elsewhere, the hugs, the shrieks of delight and the clenched fists of triumph abounded as student after student opened the envelope that contained their results.

And that success was mirrored across the age range with students from Year 10 also managing to gain excellent grades in GCSE subjects for which they were entered early. One Year 9 student, Bethany Shire, gained an A* grade in Maths two years ahead of schedule.

A delighted Headteacher, Stuart Ash described the results as “truly spectacular”. He added, “We’re delighted for the students. We’ve spoken to them about this day many times, keeping their minds focused on the moment when they open their envelope and read their results. So it’s really special today that so many of them, such a record-breaking number of them, are smiling and enjoying the fruits of their labours.”

“We’re really proud of these results because they say a great deal about us as a school. But we have to pay testament to the students themselves, who have been so outstanding – they’ve certainly gained the reward for applying themselves to their studies. They have certainly responded well to all the help with which we have provided them and the advice they have been given and their parents also have played their part. They are the ones at home who have encouraged, cajoled and driven their children to these results and we thank them enormously.”

And Mr. Ash was clear in his praise for the work of staff in the school. “What drives us as a school is the simple fact that these results will have a real impact on the lives of these young people. In that sense, I cannot praise highly enough the dedication of the whole staff. Our teachers have clearly done an excellent job: not only in teaching challenging, engaging lessons but in dedicating so much additional time to after-school classes, revision sessions, field trips… the list goes on. But this really is a whole-school achievement. We had members of the support staff involved in mentoring students and helping them prepare themselves mentally for the tough challenges of GCSE. As a school we are absolutely delighted that a record-breaking number of our students leave our school so well–prepared for post-16 education and employment. We share that delight as a school because everyone has played a part in the successes we have had today.”
