We aim to make sure all pupils receive a broad and well-balanced education enriched by a wide range of experiences. We aim to challenge all our pupils and help them to achieve their best.

Organisation of Groups

On arrival in school, pupils are placed in a tutor group, a crucial part of our organisation. As far as possible tutor groups do not change and pupils keep the same tutor for five years. We feel it is important the tutor develops a strong relationship with the class and gets to know them well.

Tutor groups are allocated to one of the four houses; Bowden, Combs, Hollins and Kinder. These contain classes from Years 7 to 11 and we aim to use the house system to foster pupils’ sense of responsibility and pride. There are many cross-House competitions to encourage pupils to participate and enjoy school activities

Key Stage 3

In Years 7, 8 and 9 (Key Stage 3) pupils are mainly taught in tutor groups but setting takes place in year 7 in Maths. In Year 8 pupils are taught in sets in Maths, French and German while setting in Science and History and Geography takes place in Year 9. These groups are flexible enough to allow pupils to move at a later stage if necessary. For some practical subjects (Technology for example) we regroup tutor groups to allow smaller classes.

All pupils study the subjects required by the National Curriculum. At Key Stage 3 pupils follow courses in English, Mathematics, Science (taught as Biology, Chemistry and Physics from Year 9), Technology, French or German, Geography, History, Art, Music, Information Technology, Religious Education, Drama and PSHE.

Key Stage 4

In the course of Year 9, pupils choose subjects they will study during Key Stage 4. All pupils follow the core curriculum: English (with the majority also studying GCSE English Literature); Mathematics; Science; RE; PE and ICT. Pupils also follow a Technology course.

They are then able to opt for other subjects. We are very proud of the wide programme we are able to offer; in addition to traditional GCSE subjects we offer a number of vocational subjects and some pupils are able to follow work related courses at local colleges or in extended work placements.

More detail of the subjects taught in the school is available from the menu on the left side of the page.
